Texas State Fair Awards

If you know anything about Texas, I’m sure you are familiar with the Texas State Fair. This beloved annual event has been held every year since 1886 in Fair Park; this long-standing tradition is a Dallas favorite.

The State Fair runs from September 25 to October 18. You can ride roller coasters, play carnival games, tour the stock yards, or (my personal favorite) gorge yourself on the best and most creatively fried food you’ll ever have.




Some food borders on the absurd, for example fried margaritas, fried butter, and fried Pop tarts (highly recommended). You can also lean towards more traditional fair food like turkey legs or funnel cakes. Regardless of what you choose, the friendly Texan vendors will serve you with a smile on their face and a guarantee of satisfaction.

Each year before the fair begins, a panel of (incredibly lucky) judges tastes each vendor’s new signature item and determines which ones will be the “Big Tex Choice.” One dish each year is chosen, and the finalists are in for 2015!




The judges choose the most creative and delicious of these Southern concoctions, and eight have made the final round. These include: Deep Fried Alligator’s Nest (alligator meat, Monterey Jack cheese, chopped jalapeños, and onions, rolled in bread crumbs and deep fried, served with chipotle sauce), Cowboy Corn Crunch (sweet corn, minced jalapeño, cream cheese, and bacon, rolled together and fried), and Chicken Fried Lobster with Champagne Gravy, which is exactly what it sounds like. Luckily, you can wash these fried delicacies down with some craft beer from the Beer Haven. The Beer Haven is known as “the largest bar on wheels.” It is a 53-foot long truck that serves sixty beers on tap near the Texas Star ferris wheel.
